When times are tough, economy-wise, young families can be hit the hardest. That’s the reason that, in 2023, the inaugural Harvest House Baby Shower event was held. The effort is in place to help young mothers access baby supplies that they might not otherwise be able to afford. The annual Baby Shower clothing and supply drive is hosted by Harvest House – a nonprofit located on Buffalo’s East Side. Aside from this important event, Harvest House also provides assistance for babies and children, healthcare (primary, dental and counseling), job training, and rental assistance.
In 2023, the Baby and Children’s Ministry assisted 600 children per month. Due to population increases, Harvest House is now servicing almost 700 children per month.
“We serve approximately 17,000 families annually, with our baby and children’s effort accounting for almost 50% of our effort,” said Joe Somma, Co-Chair of the 2nd Annual Harvest House Baby Shower. “Families come to for baby supplies, clothing, baby furniture, and other support. We were serving 600 children/month at the beginning of the year; however, due to economic and demographic changes this has jumped to 700 children/month. This increase has taken its toll on our supplies. We have experienced several instances where we have had to turn families away without basic necessities like diapers. Run during September, the Baby Shower is designed to augment our supplies before our busiest period. We have organized over 25 churches (multiple denominations), businesses, and social organizations to help this year.”
The East Side is one of Buffalo’s poorest communities with over 40% of the households living at or below the federal poverty level.
