Patrons who shop at participating bookstores—Alice, Ever After Books, Burning Books, Dog Ears Bookstore & Cafe, Fitz Books, Gutter Pop Comics, Rust Belt Books, Talking Leaves Books, Westside Stories, and Zawadi Books—from Aug. 29-Sept. 4 will be entered to win a season subscription to Just Buffalo Literary Center’s 2022-23 BABEL author series.

In addition to selling books in nearly every neighborhood, Buffalo’s independent bookstores host readings and events that support local writers and offer spaces for community members to come together. Said Meg Howe, owner of children’s bookstore Alice, Ever After Books in Buffalo’s Parkside neighborhood, “We’re here to start conversations. We’re here to share stories, both real and imagined. There’s also the data to show that when you spend your money in a local bookstore, more of that money goes back into your community than when you decide to buy online or from a big box bookstore.”

Patrons are encouraged to post photos of their Buffalo bookstore visits and “book hauls” on social media using the hashtag #BuffaloBookstoreWeek2022. For updates and bookstore features during Buffalo Bookstore Week, follow Just Buffalo Literary Center (@justbuffalolit) on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

“A city’s truer inner culture can be revealed through the choices of its stacks in independent bookstores,” said Kristianne Meal, owner of Rust Belt Books. “It is a total statement when a city can support a wide mix of independently run bookstores.”

Make a statement this week, Buffalo, and support our local bookstores!
