The Luminary Brothers’ Feature Film Debut ‘Slapped Straight’ Hits Buffalo

A new slap fighting movie, “Slapped Straight.” had its premiere in Buffalo last month.

In almost one year, the film was conceived, written, filmed, and debuted locally by Luminary Figures Group, a local Film production company run by David O. Anderson and Raynel T. Almonte.

In 2021, the filmmakers brought their production houses together, ComposedIMAGE (David) and FrameArt Pictures (Raynel), to form Luminary Figures Group or LFG. The duo are responsible for all aspects of the movies they produce. They are the writers, cinematographers, directors, and editors of their films, and with local talent from Buffalo, NY and Niagara Falls, NY, they produce quality work everytime.

Company has created 4 short films and 1 series which is still in post production.  “Slapped Straight,” is their first feature length production.

The film had its debut screening in April 2023 at the Capitol Theatre in Niagara Falls, NY where they also held a red carpet premiere. To the delight of the studio, the film was a hit with the crowd and received a standing ovation.

The idea for this unique film came to Anderson and  Almonte while they were on the set of their upcoming show “Unusual Attraction” after  Raynel asked David to slap him on camera. It was there that “Slapped Straight” was born.

Conceived with a hip-hop flair and energy, production began in April of 2022 and spanned a total of five months. Central to the film, The Luminary Brothers were careful to showcase the beautiful scenery in Buffalo and shot in various locations throughout the city.

“Slapped Straight” is now available on all major streaming platforms.

Whether you’re a competitive slapping, which got its start on the internet thanks to some viral videos, or a fan of action-packed comedies, “Slapped Straight” is sure to keep you rolling in your seat with laughter.

Update on $5 million Great Lakes 360 project @ Aquarium of Niagara

WNY has just upped its game in the category of aquariums. The Aquarium of Niagara has announced that it has tapped Turner Construction Company as the project manager for its $5 million Great Lakes 360 project. Once complete, the Great Lakes 360 project will be “a living museum featuring the notable wildlife of the Niagara River and larger Great Lakes ecosystem.”

This is a win-win for the Aquarium, not only because of Great Lakes 360’s significant tie-in with the region, but also because the project augments the Aquarium’s geographical footprint and establishes the organization as a campus in downtown Niagara Falls.

Interestingly enough, this is the first expansion in the organization’s 58-year history, making the project of utmost significance in, and for, Niagara Falls.

Here are a few items of interest to consider:

Under an agreement with New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, the Aquarium will renovate the vacant Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, also known as the Schoellkopf Geological Museum.

The 5,000 square foot building is situated just 500 feet southwest of the Aquarium’s main building, within the boundaries of the Niagara Falls State Park, and at the precipice of the Niagara Gorge.

The Aquarium will celebrate its proximity to the natural wonder of Niagara Falls by ensuring a seamless guest experience that spans across indoor and outdoor spaces.

“We are embarking on something extraordinarily significant for ecotourism in our region thanks to a fortified alliance with New York State Parks,” said Gary Siddall, President & CEO of the Aquarium of Niagara. “Visitors will have the opportunity to feel the mist coming off the falls, take to the trails to explore unique areas of the Niagara Gorge, then come to Great Lakes 360 and really get to know the animals they may have just encountered outside through hands-on experiences and compelling interpretation.”

The Great Lakes 360 project builds upon a strategic commitment to rebranding the Aquarium inside and out, including more than $10 million in new exhibits and visitor amenities.

“NYS Parks is thrilled to be partnering with the Aquarium of Niagara on this innovative project to reimagine the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center,” said Mark V. Mistretta, Niagara Region Director, New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. “The Niagara River and the Great Lakes are incredible natural resources unique to our region so to have an opportunity to tell their stories is exciting. We look forward to the opening of this new attraction that will only add to the already dynamic offerings of the Aquarium of Niagara, and the state park as a whole.”

Once complete, there will be enough space to increase the Aquarium’s exhibit potential by 40 percent. Open opening, 15 brand new exhibits will be viewable, featuring turtles, amphibians, insects, and many species of fish, all of which are native to the Great Lakes. CPL Architecture and Tenji Aquarium Design + Build has been retained to create the educational, visually stimulating, and interactive exhibits.

The indoor, year-round attraction will be accessible in tandem with the Aquarium’s main building via a single general admission ticket and is expected to welcome more than 200,000 visitors annually.

“The Aquarium of Niagara is a destination and one of the best places to visit in the Falls. Being a part of the Great Lakes 360 Project Team is thrilling for Turner and our employees. We know and value the significant impact this project will have on education, conservation, research, and recreation for both our community and visitors from outside the region. While all our projects are significant to us, the ones that provide direct benefits to our community hold a special place,” said Steven Perrigo, VP and Business Manager, Turner Construction Company.

Construction is projected to be complete in Spring 2024.

‘The Show’ @ Shea’s Seneca

The new venue at Shea’s Seneca is aptly being called ‘The Show.’ The name is a nod to Michael Shea’s movie house, which once occupied the building. The restoration of the Shea’s Seneca building, and the introduction of The Show, is thanks to the vision and fortitude of Jake Schneider, president of Schneider Development Services. It is Schneider himself, who is operating the new venue – taking over where the previous tenant left off. The Show is considered the anchor tenant of the Shea’s Seneca building.

“Normally, when a commercial space of ours becomes vacant, we would seek out a new tenant to take over the space and run the business, while we focus on running the real estate,” Schneider said. “In this case, however, I decided that running this incredible space seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass up. So I jumped at it.”

In order for things to run smoothly, Schneider brought Lisa Vitello (former Director of Sales & Catering for The Terrace at Delaware Park) onboard as General Manager. The arrangement will see The Show partnering up with local caterers for creative food service options, while taking care of bookings and the bar in-house. Preferred caterers include Osteria, Fat Bob’s, and Chuckterie.

“This will give our clients the flexibility to choose what works best for their event style and budget,” explains Vitello

The Show will be offering up custom bar packages to clients, that will showcase locally made spirits, beer, and an array of interesting wines, and specialty cocktails.

Along with the aforementioned additions and changes, the venue is also spotlighting a revamped bar, dining room, and restrooms.

“We wanted to create a more cohesive feel throughout the venue,” explains Schneider, who is originally an architect by trade.

Taking inspiration from the space’s many historic details in the foyer and lobby, the team:

Transformed the bar area with a more dramatic atmosphere

The ballroom was restyled with warm touches such as velvet drapes, along with new fixtures and furnishings

Both restrooms were updated and two private lounges for event VIPs were created

“These lounges are a great addition to the venue, a private space for guests of honor at weddings and social events, as well as guest speakers or planners for corporate meetings ,” explained Vitello.

Another new attraction to the space is Gallery Josephine, created in partnership with Resource: Art (learn more).

“Gallery Josephine opened in late April, and we couldn’t be happier with the response,” said Schneider. Artist talks and events will continue at the gallery, starting with an event in June. It is due to the association with Shea that Shea’s Seneca is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Show joins a number of other commercial tenants within the Shea’s Seneca building, including Public Espresso, April Spencer Floral Design, Cantina 62, and Bottle Rocket Beer Reserve. Skyroom Lofts, also located within the complex, consist of 23 high-end apartments.

“Other than the vacancy in the event venue, all the other commercial tenants have remained open for business since the initial redevelopment, even through the pandemic” says Schneider. “And the apartments have done very well, with limited vacancies.”

The Show will soon be joined by a new music club – The Caz – that will be setting up across the street (learn more). The club is anticipated to open in the Summer of 2024.

“I expect there to be great synergy with all the Shea’s Seneca commercial tenants and the music club,” said Schneider. “Knowing that the opening of the music club was on the horizon is one of the main reasons I decided to take over the event venue at Shea’s Seneca this year. I continue to see a lot of upside here on Seneca Street.”

The Show is located at 2188 Seneca Street.

Open House: Reimagining The Perry Community

Mayor Byron Brown and the City of Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning have announced next steps towards the demolition and rebuilding of the Perry “project” – into a modern affordable housing community.

Once demolished, the City will begin the process of creating a mix of townhomes and multi-story buildings, commercial space, and community space.

Pennrose, the firm selected to transform the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority’s circa 1939 Commodore Perry development into a modern affordable housing community, updated the Board of Commissioners on the project’s design on May 22.

“After more than a year of community engagement, we are excited to partner with the BMHA to transform the long-vacant, blighted Commodore Perry public housing complex into a vibrant, mixed-use community where residents with a variety of incomes will thrive,” said Pennrose Regional Vice President Dylan Salmons, who, along with Senior Developer William D’Avella, walked the Board of Commissioners through the planning process, which began in late 2020. “Our plans for the site include 1,000 brand new apartments with modern features, outdoor amenity space, commercial and retail space.”

Currently, the City is engaging residents – to take part in a series of community meetings – to gauge people’s response to the project. A resident ‘open house’ meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 8, 4:30pm to 6:30 pm, which will provide a better understanding of the project. There will be display stations, the standing development team, and community stakeholders onhand.

The city hopes to schedule the demolition of the complex soon after the funds are approved. The approval process could take up to early next year.

Residents will be able to input their own suggestions pertaining to the crucial development that will transform a significant former “project” into a valuable piece of property that will better benefit the community’s needs and aspirations. The open house will be held at BMHA Administration Offices at 300 Perry Street.

Hello, Dolly! Takes Center Stage in Starring Buffalo’s Latest Broadway Concert Production

The lyrics, “It’s so nice to have you back where you belong” take on a new meaning in Starring Buffalo’s upcoming production of Hello, Dolly!

WNY Soundstage
Conversation with Drew Fornarola, artistic director of Starring Buffalo, and Michele Ragusa, actress and star of Hello, Dolly

Leading actress Michele Ragusa, a Buffalo native and graduate of Holy Angels Academy, ECC, and Niagara University, and has gone on to appear in countless shows on and off Broadway, tours, and in major regional theaters across the country. Ragusa received her Equity card and gained entrance to the theatrical union, at Studio Area theater, now renamed Shea’s 710, where Hello, Dolly! will be presented on June 2 and 3, 2023. “It’s going to be really cool to be back inside the building,” shared Ragusa.

Starring Buffalo stages concert versions of Broadway shows. Drew Fornarola, Artistic Director, was inspired by NYC’s City Center Encores! Series, which offers short-run, unstaged versions of musicals starring superb Broadway performers, a perfect model for attracting busy acting professionals to build top-quality musical experiences out of town.

After their successful production of Evita earlier in the year, Fornarola felt Buffalo audiences might enjoy something different. “We’ve had a little bit of everything. We’ve had comedy. We’ve had rock. We’ve had contemporary musical theater.  We’ve had Sondheim. We haven’t done the Golden Age of Musical Theatre yet, so it was time. I love composer Jerry Herman. I love this story and this is a style of music, sort of Golden Age Broadway, that we haven’t had represented in our company yet, and I think it’s going to be a real treat for theatergoers.”

Ragusa has played the role before but is looking forward to revisiting one of the biggest and most exciting roles in the musical theater canon. Audiences can expect to be delighted by her performance, which is guided by humor. “I like to bring as much comedy as I can,” shared Ragusa. “I also love the moments where she’s talking to her husband, Ephraim, you know, it’s so heartfelt and just beautiful.”

Fornarola’s presentation of classic musical titles in concert format has many benefits.

We can really focus on the singing and the story… This is only possible because we can do this in a short [rehearsal] time for the Broadway artists, for Tony Award winners or people in Broadway shows [who] can take a week off. They can come to Buffalo, they can do a dream role, and we can really focus on the words and music.

Drew Fornarola is a Composer, Lyricist, Playwright, and Artistic Director of Starring Buffalo

Starring Buffalo looks to connect not only audiences but also local actors and musicians with Broadway performers. “As I was dipping my toe back into the Buffalo Theater community and realizing how talented the folks are in our community, I wanted to create some kind of exchange where we brought some people from New York into Buffalo to share ideas, but also that the New Yorkers got to interact with and learn from the Buffalo folks,” shared Fornarola.

“And we’ve had several Western New York actors, after their Starring Buffalo experiences, go on to book national tours or book shows in New York and also come back to Buffalo and continue to perform. So I think demystifying that pipeline…is something that’s important to us.”

Hello, Dolly! features a nine-piece orchestra, conducted by Alison d’Amato, and stars Michele Ragusa as Dolly Gallagher Levi, Ali Ewoldt, who recently played “Christine” in Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera, as Irene Molloy, Kevin Zak (Waitress The Musical) as Cornelius Hackl, and Buffalo Artie Award-Winner Gregory Gjurich as Horace Vandergelder. Jake Hayes, Melanie Klaja, Anthony Lazzaro, Jetaun Louie, Kayla McSorley, and Marc Sacco round out the cast, as well as the Starring Buffalo Community Chorus, dancers, and musicians.

Microplastic Recycling Bins Hit the Streets

CEPA Gallery has collaborated with artist Nicole Chochrek to launch a new public “art bin” project that will teach people the importance of recycling plastics. As microplastics in the environment become ever-present – even in fish, animals, and humans – it’s time to figure out how we can begin to make some big changes in the way that we live. Our current consumption habits are not working, and will continue to adversely affect the planet.

To that end, six plastic collection boxes, built from retired newspaper recycling bins, will be places at strategic locations throughout the region, in hopes that people will dispose of plastic before it can enter into the environment in the form of near-invisible nanoparticles.

Chochrek’s work is based on the accessibility and digestibility of information, deep listening, and shared responsibilities.

According to Chochrek, these are not typical recycling containers. Rather, they are meant to keep smaller scraps of plastic off the sidewalks, streets, lawns, parks… and even our homes. If you have ever conducted a cleanup in a commercial district, then you have noticed that upon sweeping, much of the smaller debris is that of small pieces of plastic. When a rainstorm comes along, those pieces of plastic are swept away, down the sewer drains. During heavier storms, the plastics are diverted to combined sewer overflows, that wash the plastic particles directly into our waterways. From there, they continue to break down into microplastics.

The public can participate in this project by collecting small plastics from home or outside.

Says Chochrek, “There is a lot of healthy skepticism around recycling, and whether or not it has the impact it claims to have. This project appropriates the existing system while providing transparency and educational resources. It gives participants the opportunity to learn about the significance of their contributions and to see how it is collected and transformed. We focus on the smaller plastics, that are often missed and can’t be recycled in traditional ways. The goal of these Microplastic Recycling Bins serves to beautify our communities, build stewardship of the land, and educate us on the impact of plastic pollution. It extends a colorful invitation that I hope encourages participation and cultivates creative solutions.”

As an interdisciplinary artist, Chochrek utilizes performative frameworks to explore contemporary issues of environmental disparities.

The installation of the six Microplastic Recycling Bins will coincide with neighborhood cleanups, as well as small celebrations. Chochrek will host the initial installation celebration and community clean-up event on May 31 at Springville Center for the Arts. The plastic pieces collected by each bin will ultimately converted into “beautiful trash-as-art objects,” to demonstrate that there are creative ways to upcycle plastics.

“That’s the magic. The plastic collected will not only be forever out of our lands but also given new value as fine art objects that continue to advocate for environmental stewardship through Chochrek’s art practice,” says Veronique Cote, project curator, and Florida Atlantic University Galleries Director. “By selling  beautiful trash as art objects, she questions our value systems. She brings attention to the growing impact our waste has on the environment while simultaneously holding space for togetherness, inclusivity, and creative discussions on important topics such as neurodiversity, environmental stewardship, and human rights.”

This project guides participants in a kinesthetic learning experience per the impact of plastic pollution, and actively helps remove it from their neighborhood environment.

The boxes will be outside from June to October 2023. The public can participate in this project by collecting small plastics from home or outside.

The project is made possible by Creative Rebuild New York, a New York State Endowment for the Arts Initiative,  in partnership with the Buffalo Arts Commission, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Unity Island, The Foundry, Tifft Nature Preserve, Springville Center For-Arts, and more. For information on the project, other box locations, and dates visit: brokenplastics.org.

Big Reveal: Broadway Barns Redevelopment

The City has found a development team to redevelop the Broadway Barns at 195 Broadway, a Public Works facility located just east of Michigan Avenue. A team led by Silo City developer Anthony Ceroy of Nysko Development, Danielle Shainbrown and Nicole Komen of Bellweather Advisors, Hallmark Planning and Development, and Carmina Wood Design have been selected to take on the project which will include commercial, recreation and residential space.

According to The Buffalo News, the proposal beat out one other bidder for the site. The public works garage occupies a 4.67-acre parcel that fronts both Broadway and William Street and includes 181,150 sq.ft. of space. Originally known as the Broadway Arsenal and then the Broadway Auditorium, the building has historical significance within the community as a former sporting venue. It is considered one of the oldest surviving buildings in the country to have hosted professional hockey.

Under plans prepared by Carmina Wood Design, the facility will return to its roots with the existing building along Broadway converted to a sports complex and a U-shaped residential building in the back along William Street. Two indoor sports fields for both youth and adult play will occupy the cavernous barn section with administrative offices and a café fronting Broadway and a smaller training field, cross-fit gym and community space in the center of the block.

Along William Street, a four-story, U-shaped building with an interior courtyard and indoor parking is planned along with approximately 130 affordable residential units including two-level townhouses topped by two floors of apartments. A neighborhood restaurant and other retail space would be located on the first floor along William Street.

Construction cannot begin until Public Works operations are relocated. The City also issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to establish a combined DPW Campus to replace the Barns and other scattered facilities.  The City is still reviewing proposals for that project.  Once the facility is vacated in late-2024, the redevelopment project is expected to take two years to construct.
