Ten Lives club plans big expansion with state grant dollars

BLASDELL, N.Y. (WIVB) — A large expansion is coming to the Ten Lives Club in Blasdell.

The cat rescue will receive $200,000 from the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund to expand their shelter, improve quality of life and create more room to shelter homeless felines.

The Lakeshore Road facility is planning a two-story addition and new adoption center, which a shelter spokesperson hopes will boost adoptions.

Other upgrades will include a heating, ventilation and an air conditioning system for new cat condos and medical cages.

“This is amazing news for Ten Lives Club as the need to help homeless cats in our area continues to grow. The number of cats we take in continues to exceed our shelter’s housing capacity, so this much-needed expansion is crucial to fulfilling our mission of saving the lives of as many cats as we can,” said Marie Edwards, founder and executive director, Ten Lives Club.

“This is the first time in our shelter’s history that we will receive funding from the state. We cannot thank the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets enough for giving animal welfare shelters the opportunity to expand through the NYS Companion Animal Capital Fund Grant Program and for believing in the good work we do at Ten Lives Club for our feline friends.”

Man acquitted of attempted murder could get 15 years in prison

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Elmarious Honeycutt, 29, has been convicted of an illegal gun charge after being acquitted of attempted murder and attempted robbery.

The charge stems from an incident that took place in July 2019. According to prosecutors, Honeycutt arranged a meeting with another man to exchange marijuana.

About half an hour after that, the man and his girlfriend drove to Durham Street to meet up. A struggle began when Honeycutt got into their back seat, and at some point, the other man was shot in the neck.

Officials say Honeycutt fell out of the vehicle, picked up the gun and ran away. The woman in the vehicle drove her boyfriend to ECMC, where he was treated.

Honeycutt, who was found guilty of criminal possession of a weapon, faces up to 15 years in prison when he’s sentenced on May 25. He’s currently being held without bail.

Canisius College Introduces Next President, Steve K. Stoute

The Canisius College Board of Trustees announced last week that Steve K. Stoute, JD, vice president for strategic initiatives and chief of staff at DePaul University in Chicago, IL, was named the institution’s 25th president. He will begin his tenure on July 1, 2022.

Stoute (pictured above) was selected following a 10-month nationwide search led by a 15-member Presidential Search Committee representing the college’s constituencies. Stoute joined DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the United States, in June 2018 to serve as chief of staff. He also has served as vice president for strategic initiatives since June 2020. “We were extremely impressed with Presidentelect Stoute’s experience and accomplishments,” said Martin J. Berardi ’79, chair of the college’s Board Steve K. Stoute of Trustees.

Stoute will succeed President John J. Hurley who announced his retirement after serving 12 years as president and 25 years overall at Canisius. “Presidential transitions are important moments in the life of a university,” said Hurley. “I’m confident that Steve Stoute will bring fresh perspectives to the challenges and opportunities in front of us and form a new strategic vision that will build on the fundamental strengths of Canisius and secure an even brighter future for us.”

“I believe in the transformative power of Catholic higher education because that is my life story,” Stoute said. “At this moment in our history, Canisius College is being called to transform our city, region, country and world by educating the next generation of leaders—individuals who are equityminded, justice-oriented and values-centered. I am excited to engage all our constituents and collaborators in Western New York and beyond, to answer that call, with the knowledge that our Jesuit, Catholic mission and values will be our guide on the journey.”

An attorney, Stoute previously worked as an associate specializing in corporate and securities matters at Dechert LLP in Philadelphia, PA. His higher education experience includes work at Princeton University, and at the University of Southern California.

Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Stoute immigrated to the United States in 2000 to attend Seton Hall University in New Jersey where he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After completing the prestigious NCAA postgraduate internship, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed a master’s degree in exercise and sport science. He earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Stoute and his wife, Alison, will move to Buffalo with their two daughters, Isabelle and Genevieve.

T-Pain announced as first performer at Outer Harbor this year

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man whom Buffalo fans have knocked down a fence to see will be back in the Queen City during Memorial Day Weekend.

T-Pain is scheduled to kick off this year’s Outer Harbor Concert Series.

During a 2016 performance at Canalside, an estimated 25,000 fans showed up to see him perform. This was way above the average attendance of 7,000 to 15,000, according to Ryan Coate, who was serving as Canalside’s general manager at the time.

“At about 8:30, we shut the gates down, because we were at our full capacity,” Coate said.

But this didn’t stop fans, as Coates says roughly 1,000 to 1,500 broke through the fence to get in. Those outside the Canalside barriers could be seen hopping on street signs to get a better look at the stage.

T-Pain returned to western New York the following year, performing at The Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls.

This year, fans can come see him on May 29. General admission for the concert will be $24, while VIP tickets will be $49.

Those looking for tickets can get them at this link, starting at 10 a.m.

Gates to the Outer Harbor show will open at 5 p.m. More shows at the Outer Harbor are expected to be announced soon.

Buffalo businesses could see boost with March Madness return

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo will be bustling with college basketball fans later this month. March Madness will return to the KeyBank Center.

The first two rounds of the NCAA tournament will happen on March 17 and 19.

Leaders with the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission spoke about the huge impact these games could have on local businesses.

“19,000 people are going to leave that arena and they are going to be looking for a burger and a beer and a place to stay warm. So that’s going to be a good opportunity for all the businesses in the area,” said Pete Harvey of the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission.

We will find out which teams will be playing on March 13, which is Selection Sunday.

And this won’t be the last time the tournament will be played downtown.

March Madness will return to the Queen City in 2026.
