Harmonizing Holiday Traditions: The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s Musical Festivities

For so many Buffalonioans, the holidays are all about traditions.  Some families mark the season by attending festive events together, to connect, celebrate, observe, and spend quality time together.  Many families spend a portion of their Holiday Season with The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, affectionately referred to as the BPO.  Their diverse programming truly has something for everyone, from the casual music lover, to the most steadfast orchestral music aficionado.

“Holiday traditions are a cornerstone of the BPO’s repertoire, as they not only celebrate the festive spirit but also connect the community through shared experiences,” said Jonathan Parrish, Vice President, Artistic & Orchestra Operations, adding:

These traditions reflect the BPO’s commitment to honoring musical heritage while also creating new, cherished memories for audiences of all ages. The holiday season is a time when music’s power to unite and inspire is most palpable, and the BPO prides itself on being a key part of WNY’s seasonal celebrations.

All of the programming this season was selected with Buffalo audiences in mind. “Each concert is designed to bring the joy and warmth of the holiday spirit to our community, showcasing both traditional holiday classics and new, innovative arrangements,” shared Parrish.

The Holiday Season starts on Saturday, November 25 at 2:30 PM, with Disney’s Frozen in Concert: Film with Live OrchestraThis family friendly event is a fantastic way to introduce youngsters to the power of live orchestral music.  The film will be projected over the orchestra, and attendees will hear their favorite songs from the film played live.    In addition, audience members are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters from the film for enchanting photo opportunities.

Michael Bolton, Grammy® award winning singer will be with the BPO on Wednesday, December 6, at 7:30 PM. The first half of the evening will include selections from West Side Story, Disney’s Hercules, and pieces that will feature guest vocalists Cami Clune and Matt Wilson.  In the second half of the evening, Michael Bolton will join the orchestra in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of music.

A veritable Buffalo institution, JoAnn’s Classical Christmas  is the next Holiday offering at the BPO on December 8 at 10:30 AM, and December 9 at 7:30 PM.  “JoAnn’s Classical Christmas concerts are a highlight of our holiday season,” said Parrish. “Maestro JoAnn Falletta curates an incredible repertoire and her ability to bring out the best in the orchestra make these concerts truly magical. Under her baton, the BPO performs timeless holiday classics with a fresh and exhilarating energy, creating an immersive and memorable experience that has become a cherished tradition for many in our community. This year’s concert highlights Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto.”

On Sunday, December 10 at 2:30 PM the Jingle Bell Jam will come to Kleinhan’s Music Hall.  This afternoon of festive fun will include a special souvenir for kids, a holiday sing-a-long, and a special visit from Saint Nicholas himself, as he assists Fernanda Lastra to conduct the concert.

Finally, the BPO closes out the Holiday season with Holiday Pops with John Morris Russell.  This popular event will be presented from December 14 through the 17, and like an amazing holiday meal, this evening of music features old favorites, new delights, and spices up some arrangements to enchant Buffalo audiences for the season.

In addition to the offerings at Kleinhan’s Music Hall, the home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the BPO also offers other opportunities to see them this holiday season.  On November 26, Handel’s Messiah will be performed at Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, and on December 3 at St. Mary’s Swormville in  East Amherst, NY.  An intimate candlelight concert will be presented at Clement House on Delaware Ave on November 30 at 5:30 PM.

Perhaps attending a concert at the BPO can become a new holiday outing for you and yours, or perhaps you will go to Kleinhan’s as part of your yearly seasonal celebrations.  Jonathan Parrish certainly hopes to see you there. “From the majesty of classical pieces to the fun and familiarity of holiday pops, and from family-friendly concerts to those perfect for a date night, we have something for everyone. Our goal is to make the holiday season more musical and joyful for everyone in our community, regardless of age or musical preference.”

Tickets for any of these events can be purchased at BPO.org.
