North American Handmade Classic Bicycle Gallery @ Shickluna

It’s not often that you hear about a bike shop putting on a show that features the works of exquisite/rare bike frame builders from all over the US. But that’s exactly what Shickluna Bike Shop is doing, starting with an opening reception on Friday, January 20 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

On that day, there will be 10 hand-built classic bicycles from legendary American frame builders on display.

“We did an event like this last year, featuring Italian bikes,” said Chris Salisbury. “Coming from the fitness industry, I know how important these types of events are, especially in the winter when people are itching for things to do. At Shickluna, we love old bikes and we collect bikes. Half of the bikes that we are showcasing are ours, and half are our customers. We’re excited to show them off to people that like the art of the bicycle as much as we do.”

Chris told me that he’s so into the art of bike frame-building, that he’s embarking upon taking a series of classes from a renowned builder – Metal Guru – in November.

“We have an 800 square foot building in back of the shop that we’re remodeling. We’re going to turn it into half storage and half frame-building,” Chris told me. “In Europe in the 70’s and 80’s, every shop had a ‘house brand bike’ that they sold. It was easier for them to work on the bikes that they built. We love the stories behind these types of bikes. We’re showing some pretty serious and rare bikes that are almost impossible to find. Each of these bikes has a story. They’re like art.”
