2024 Open Essex – An Open Air Art Fair @ BICA

Each year, The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art (BICA) hosts an event known as Open Essex, which features a variety of artists in two distinct settings. First, there are the artists featured in the gallery. This year, on Saturday, June 22, the works of Alex Boeschenstein and Hannah Lin will be on display:

Alex Boeschenstein “Silent Terminalia”

In the early Roman world, Terminalia festivals were held annually to celebrate the thresholds between adjoining properties. The boundary stones—frequently a centaur-like combination of a found rock for a base and the carved bust of the god Terminus for a top—around which these festivals took place, demarcated the meeting point of two zones of human dominion and control.  In “Silent Terminalia” Alex Boeschenstein’s uncanny works mark the speculative threshold between the human and the non-human, the known and the unknown, the everyday and the cosmically horrifying.

Hannah Lin “Fringe Scenarios”

This exhibition of works by Hannah Lin blur the line between sculpture and utility, talking the objects and materials we encounter in our daily domestic lives and recasting them into new characters.
Hannah Lin is a designer and ceramicist currently living in Buffalo, NY. Her work merges designed objects and furniture with clay handbuilding techniques to form objects that straddle the line between utility and sculpture. She likes to explore the mundane challenges and experiences of being human through the lens of deadpan humor. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016, and she is currently a participant in BICA School.

Aside from the gallery exhibitions, BICA is also setting up in the parking lot, with installations and an open-air art fair. Featured artists on that day are as follows: wavyH BooneKoalaQuincy Miracle, Emily ConstantinNick MassAngela GuestJP4HireAlison Cortes, and Natalie Hayes & Lucas Cook.
