A Good Sign at 7-11 Elmwood Location

It wasn’t long after posting about an upcoming community meeting to address crime and drug issues on Elmwood Avenue (from Lexington Avenue to Summer Street) that a new development occurred at the 7-11 (within that same stretch). As I passed by the location a few days ago, workers from Benderson Development were hammering in a sign that broadcasts that the site is for lease.

Hopefully this bit of unexpected good news bodes well for this corner convenient store location, which shares an adjoined footprint with Just Pizza. For years, community members have been side-eyeing this parcel, which has now come under even further scrutiny with news that a drug “flea market” has been setting up, after hours, at the 7-11 parking lot.

I see this new development as a strong opportunity to push for something great, instead of settling for dreck, or even mediocrity. Rarely do we see these types of real estate transitions come to pass. Of course we do not know what the future of the site beholds, but maybe there is a chance for the community to help steer the course of the site.

Would it be amazing to see this building demolished and a new-build erected? Of course! Would it be a real win for the community to see a desirable business occupy this parcel? Heck yes! I’m not sure if the community will be able to help steer the course of this site, but one thing is for sure – if we don’t try to affect some positive changes in a helpful and constructive way, then… nothing ventured, nothing gained.
