Addition by Subtraction on Bryant

Ellicott Development is proposing to demolish a carriage house at the rear of 187 Bryant Street as part of its Elmwood Crossings project.  The circa-1892 structure would be replaced by a playground, pergola and landscape area, part of a greenspace that would connect Bryant Street with Hodge Avenue east of the Alfiero Building.

From the Preservation Board agenda:

The above-referenced project site is located on the north side of Bryant Street between Elmwood Avenue and Delaware Avenue. The site is currently comprised of a single-family home and a garage in the rear. The site is part of the redevelopment of the “Core Campus” structures of the former Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo; an Elmwood Crossing project that received Major Site Plan approval from the City of Buffalo Planning Board on July 31, 2023. As illustrated on the included Site Plan (C-100, dated July 24, 2023), the area where the existing garage sits will be re-purposed as part of a community green space to be completed in conjunction with the Core Campus redevelopment.

The Preservation Board will consider the demolition request at its Thursday meeting. The main Children’s Hospital buildings including Variety Tower, Tanner Tower, Alfiero Center and Building C are proposed to include 94,000 sq.ft. of commercial space on the first and second floors topped by 135 residential units including condominium units on the eight through tenth floors of the former Variety Tower.
