Art’abilities – A Celebration of Inclusive Artwork

Art is for everyone, no matter their age, background, or ability. People come in all forms, and so does art. Art is something that ties us all together, which is why it’s so important that it’s inclusive in nature.

One organization in Buffalo that has dedicated itself to providing art programs to those who might not otherwise have access to them is GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center. GiGi’s Playhouse caters to individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities, as well neurotypical artists.

Gigi’s Buffalo programs and amenities include art, music, and sign language, karaoke, fitness activities, a teaching kitchen, and educational opportunities.

On Saturday, April 29, GiGi’s Playhouse will play host to Art’abilities – a celebration of inclusive artwork by artists with disabilities, as well as artists without disabilities. The event will is free to attend, and everyone is welcome to stop by to see the range of artwork showcased.

“GiGi’s Playhouse is the only one brick and mortar that exists, locally,” explains Emily Mondschein, whose youngest son, Paul, was born with Down syndrome. “We provide free programming for individuals with Down syndrome, and other disabilities, across the age range. Our artists have been working on their own creations through our umbrella of art programs, to be displayed at Art’abailities. We also have submissions from local artists with disabilities across the WNY area. Local artists without disabilities will also be displaying their artwork. The event will be catered by a group of individuals who have Down syndrome and we will also have musical artists with Down syndrome who will be performing.  This event is an opportunity to celebrate our community while inviting the lager WNY community inside our doors, to see the magic that is happening each and every day at GiGi’s Playhouse.”
