Are you new to Buffalo? Do you know someone that’s new to Buffalo? If so then, please consider attending, or passing along, this welcoming new event that is designed to get newcomers to Buffalo firmly grounded.
On Wednesday, May 3, Be in Buffalo will be hosting a Newcomer Meetup, starting at 5:30pm at Hartman’s Distilling Co.
It is interesting to note the reason behind this new event. I think that a lot of us assume that Buffalo, being The City of Good Neighbors, is naturally a pretty welcoming place, where people don’t have to do much to meet others.
People that have recently moved to (or back to) the Buffalo Niagara region and are looking for a way to meet new folks and learn new things about their community.
Well, according to Be in Buffalo (the region’s talent attraction program), that might not necessarily be true. Apparently, through surveys and research, the organization has learned that more needs to be done to ensure that repats and newcomers are given the tools that they need to thrive in Buffalo. Whether that means connecting others that have recently returned, or introducing people to aspects of Buffalo that most of us take for granted, there are plenty of ways that we can make the transition a little easier. After all, moving to a new city can be a bit scary, especially for people who work from home. The Newcomer Meetup should be a great way to make some new friends and acquaintances, and to learn the ins and outs of being a Buffalonian.
“Buffalo is known as ‘The City of Good Neighbors’ and our hope is that the Be in Buffalo Newcomer Meetup can help us live up to that moniker – making connections to new professional development groups or volunteer opportunities, learning career pathways you might not have known existed, just making a new friend, and increasing a general sense of belonging and community,” said Greg Pokriki, who runs the Be in Buffalo program.
The goal is that these meetups will eventually be held on a bimonthly basis. That would be quite something!
