BRR|Alliance 2024 Spring Environmental Speaker Series includes update on the possibility of hydrokinetic turbines in the Niagara River

Are you interested to know more about the Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust? How about the migration patterns of WNY waterfowl? Or maybe you want to learn about some key environmental projects happening in the community?

Each year, the BRR|Alliance hosts an environmental speaker series that informs people about a wide range of interesting topics.

This year’s speaker series includes an update on the possibility of hydrokinetic turbines in the Niagara River – a topic that has been relatively dormant over the last few years, but is still as controversial as ever.

According to Hydro Review, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the Buffalo-Niagara Hydrokinetic Project has received a revised preliminary permit application for Buffalo-Niagara Hydrokinetic Project (learn more). That means that the time is now to learn more about the overall potential versus the negative repercussions that a project of this nature would have on the river, including impacts on wildlife.

In 2020, Buffalo Rising writer John Szalasny posted his take on harnessing the waters of the Mighty Niagara – Capturing More Clean Energy from the Niagara River. It seems like this topic is now more current than ever, as people gather along the battle lines to discuss the pros and the cons of this environmental opportunity that will have long lasting effects that are still relatively unknown.

Thanks to the BRR|Alliance, we will now have a chance to engage in a discussion that should prove enlightening, no matter one’s stance on the subject.
