Buffalo ReUse launches “Sunfields of Buffalo”

Buffalo ReUse has launched its “Sunfields of Buffalo” project along the Jefferson Avenue corridor.

Over the weekend, volunteers met up at the TOPS friendly market parking lot before pitching in to beautify Jefferson Avenue, between Northampton Street and Ferry Street. The undertaking – co-sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets, the Greater Jefferson Avenue Business Association, DiVal Safety, Marie Industries, and Wiley Stadium Block Club – signaled the launch of Buffalo ReUse’s “Sunfields of Buffalo.” Sunfields of Buffalo is in place to transform vacant lots along the Jefferson corridor into vibrant fields of Sunflowers that will bloom in late Summer and early Fall.

Cleaner streets, beautiful neighborhoods, and mobilized volunteers was a critical focus of Buffalo ReUse’s mission when they were founded in 2007.

“Our goal is for Jefferson Avenue to be an inviting, comfortable, safe and beautiful place for people all across the city and for the folks that visit here everyday,” stated Michael Gainer, Co-Director and Founder of Buffalo ReUse. “As long time members and residents and the community, we are committed to energizing volunteers and creating beauty.”

Along with planting fields of sunflowers, volunteers will also be relocating several large planters and sprucing up several existing flower planters along Jefferson Avenue.

“The Goal is quite simple! We want more people visiting and spending their money on Jefferson Avenue to help expand the work we’ve been focusing on for years. We need to keep the focus on Jefferson,” said Larry Stitts, Co-owner of Golden Cup Coffee, located at the corner of Jefferson/Utica.

In 2022, ReUse’s founding board was reassembled, bringing with it a renewed passion “to be a positive force for change on the East Side.”

Sunfields of Buffalo is an excellent example of how a community can come together to help transform a neighborhood’s image… with something as simple as sunflowers.
