East Side Avenues: The Bailey

When was the last time that you walked down Bailey Avenue? If you live in the neighborhood, hopefully it wasn’t too long ago. If you don’t live in the neighborhood, that’s a different story.

There was a time when Bailey was considered a shopping destination for people from all over WNY. It was heavily populated with businesses. It was also a very walkable street. So walkable, in fact, that people would say, “Let’s do a Bailey,” which meant that they were going to walk the street, much the same way that people walk Elmwood and Hertel.

The good thing about Bailey is that as much as it lost some of its luster over the years, the street still has great bones. It also has activists such as Evanette Veira who are committed to seeing the revitalization of the commercial district. Evanette is one of the graduates of East Side Avenue’s Community-Based Real Estate Development Training program (class of 2022). The program provided Evanette with the tools that she needs to make a bigger impact on Bailey – a neighborhood that she has lived in her entire life.

Now that she has graduated, Evanette’s intentions are to develop 2969 Bailey Avenue into a mix of affordable housing units, a café, and a co-working space. Here’s her story:

Applications are still available for the East Side 2023 Community-Based Real Estate Development Training program. They are due on Thursday, November 17, 2022
