Entertaining events in the Grassroots Gardens: Gamelan Performance and Garden Games

Grassroots Gardens settings are perfect for enjoying the outdoors, and everything that Mother Nature has to offer. While most of the Grassroots Gardens outings are simply “visits to the 104 gardens in WNY,” there are some events that take place that are more orchestrated in nature. During the month of June, the community is invited to take part in a couple of free entertaining events.

The first event is a Grassroots Gamelan Indonesian Wayan puppetry performance and concert on Saturday, June 8, from 1 pm to 4 pm at Lombard Clark Community Garden (71 Lombard Street, Buffalo NY 14208 – across from Eugene V. Debs Hall). The free, all-ages event will feature live music and a puppetry craft table.

“We are incredibly excited to be playing our first performance in the diverse Broadway Fillmore neighborhood,” said Matt Dunning, Executive Director at Nusantara Arts. “Nusantara Arts is bringing a truly world class performance to the neighborhood, with guest artists from Indonesia like Midiyanto and Wakidi. The idea for Grassroots Gamelan is about activating the community and activating these very special community Grassroots Gardens spaces that are all throughout the city. The performance is going to be large and fun. We have been working on this very special production for the last two months and it’s going to be an event not to miss!”

The Story: “Ciptoning” – Ciptoning is one of the original stories of Javanese wayang. The story is a meditation on meditation, bravery and mastery over one’s inner self in order to do great things for others.

Activities & Workshops: Wayang Puppetry Craft Table – make your own Wayang Kulit Shadow puppet and take it home!

Accessibility:  Performance is on the street under a large tent. Wheelchair accessible, with ADA bathrooms on site

The second event is Games in the Garden, featuring the competitive board game Wingspan. According to Grassroots Gardens, the game is a competitive board game about building habitats and enticing colorful birds to live there. Game day will take place on Thursday, June 20, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Broadway Community Garden (389 Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14204), and new players are welcome to participate.
