Jazz at The Prez presents The Music of Burt Bacharach

The all-star Elliot Scozzaro Quintet celebrates the legendary composer in an afternoon concert in the Elmwood Village

The Elmwood Village Association (EVA), in collaboration with Lafayette Presbyterian Church, presents The Music of Burt Bacharach on Sunday, April 14, 2023 at 2 pm. The last of a three-concert series benefits the EVA’s free summer Bidwell Concert Series, Porchfest, and Autumn on Elmwood among other numerous events and activities throughout the year. Located in Lafayette Presbyterian Church at 875 Elmwood Avenue at the corner of Lafayette Avenue in Buffalo, tickets are $20 for the general public and discounted at $15.00 for EVA members and seniors (65+), and $10 for ages 17 and under.

This final concert of the series initiated by former EVA board member, Kathleen Rooney, celebrates the prolific Burt Bacharach, and features an all-star line-up led by the award-winning alto saxophonist Elliot Scozzaro in a quintet featuring some of the region’s finest musicians.  Joining Scozzaro is Mark Filsinger on trumpet; Nick Weiser on piano; Joseph Goehle on bass; and John Bacon on drums.

Bacharach, along with lyricist Hal David, wrote hundreds of popular songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts over four decades.  Their collaboration produced the Tony Award-Winning musical, “Promises, Promises” and Dionne Warwick’s Grammy Hall of Fame winner, “Alfie” among other hits too numerous to list. The quintet will showcase many familiar tunes such as “The Look of Love,” “Arthur’s Theme,” and “Walk On By,” along with some lesser-known compositions.

Burt Bacharach, who died in February 2023 at the age of 94, is regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in 20th century popular music. Over 1,000 different artists have recorded his music from Tom Jones to Elvis Costello. The “Bacharach sound” is characterized by unusual chord progressions influenced by jazz harmony, with striking syncopated rhythmic patterns, irregular phrasing, frequent modulation, and changing meters. It is unmistakably unique.
