Now Open: The Nickel Plate @ The NFFT

The Nickel Plate – a 7700 SF food-meets-artisan concept at the Niagara Frontier Food Terminal (NFFT) – is now open. I spoke to owners Ty Reynolds and Nick Smith last November, when they were solidifying the concept. At the time, they were also trying to wrap their heads around the concept that would take a herculean effort to pull off. It was also at the time, other than having a cleared out space, and some shelving racks, there wasn’t much else to see.

Fast forward six months, and a lot of things are now underway at The Nickel Plate. The shelves are stocked, and the tables are set for the eatery/market to become a real solid destination at the NFFT. From a bevy of sandwich selections to cold cases of kolsch beer to scores of Buffalo merch, there’s plenty to look forward to at The Nickel Plate.

“Currently we have over 110 business from Western New York, and growing every week, along with over 60 breweries, wineries and mead companies from New York State,” Smith stated

“It’s been really exciting to start this business from the ground up,” added Reynolds, who formerly owned Mazurek’s Bakery with Smith. “It’s exciting to have so many different businesses from Western New York in one location. We’ve built a great little community over the past year of planning, now we’re looking forward to sharing everything with the public.”

Scoping out the menu at The Nickel Plate, customers will be happy to find an plethora of items to choose from, including loaded tots, crunch rolls, wings and fingers, wraps, slads, burgers (including veggie), sandwiches, and a kid’s menu.

The Nickel Plate also has a built-in artisan market, a loading dock patio, and an ethical stance on how everything is operated, including an inclusive workforce. According to the owners, the business took the New York States Employability Pledge which is when a business demonstrates it’s committed to the spirit of inclusivity by employing qualified people with disabilities and providing everyone full opportunities to be a patron and customer.

The Nickel Plate is open daily from 9am to 8pm, with the restaurant/bar opening at 11am. For daily information you can follow the business at www.facebook.com/tnpbuffalo. Also see Instagram, and www.tnpbuffalo.com.
