Official Bottle Launch: John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce

John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce Launch Party Celebrates Buffalo’s Culinary Heritage and the Birth of Buffalo Wings

John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce – a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, widely considered to be the original wing sauce invented in Buffalo – will soon be available at stores throughout Western New York.

With roots tracing back to the 1960s, John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce was a big hit with customers at his restaurant, which was located at Jefferson and Carlton. But like many things on the city’s East Side, Young’s legacy faded away, only to be revitalized and reinvigorated by John Young’s Original co-founders Lina Brown Young, daughter of John Young, and Buffalo Bike Tours owner Marc Moscato. Together, the two are in the process of restoring John Young’s legacy, one saucy wing at a time.

John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce was created by John Young, the “King of the Wings,” and founder of Buffalo’s first wing shop, Wings N’ Things.

The official launch of the bottled sauce – touted as the undisputed “Chicken Wing Capital of the World” – will occur at a sauce unveiling and party for the general public on Saturday, January 6. from 12pm to 3pm at the home of The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission (136 Broadway). The event will have free samples and bottles for purchase. There will be presentations on the sauce and its storied history, as well as a chance to meet Lina Brown Young.

Mumbo sauce is perfect for wings, salmon, or your favorite foods – whether fried, grilled, or baked.

“The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor and its four Cultural Anchors are proud to be a part of this great event. The John Young story is uniquely connected to the Heritage Corridor story, emblematic of hundreds of stories that celebrate a proud and resilient people and community who despite the odds nonetheless rose above adversity to become incredibly successful,” said Terry Alford, Executive Director of the Michigan Street Corridor. “John Young’s famous mumbo sauce has stood the test of time and will continue to entice taste buds for many generations to come.”

“I am thrilled to share my father’s culinary legacy with the world through the launch of John Young’s Original Mumbo Sauce,” said Lina Brown Young, Co-founder of John Young’s Original. “I want you to enjoy my father’s sauce, and I want you to remember the person who started it.”

Co-founder Marc Moscato added, “This project combines our shared missions of celebrating our cultural heritage. It’s also a delicious product we’re excited to have everyone try. You don’t know Buffalo until you’ve had John Young’s Original.”

Bottles are for sale online at the company’s website, and will soon be available at stores throughout Western New York.
