Sabres trade forward Casey Mittelstadt to Colorado for defenseman Bowen Byram

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Sabres traded forward Casey Mittelstadt to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Bowen Byram in a one-for-one trade, the team announced Wednesday.

Mittelstadt, 25, led Buffalo in scoring this season with 47 points in 62 games. He is entering the final year of a three-year contract and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. He was the Sabres’ top choice in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Byram, 22, has tallied eight goals and 20 points in 55 games for the Avalanche this season. He was the fourth overall selection in the 2019 draft and won the 2022 Stanley Cup with Colorado.

Byram has one year left on his contract with an AAV of $3.85 million. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The NHL trade deadline is set for 3 p.m. Friday, meaning Buffalo could still be busy in the coming two days.
