Salsa in the Park returning to Delaware Park Monday

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Jerome Williams has been moving his dancing feet to the beat his entire life.

He and the founder of Salsa in the Park, Sarah Haykel, are getting right back into the rhythm to spend the next six Monday nights teaching the salsa.

“I say salsa or dance is a metaphor for life,” Haykel said. “Everything that we learn to be great dancers on the dance floor, we can apply to any relationship, any aspect of our lives, to have better, healthier relationships and just enjoy life and have more fun.”

Salsa in the Park has been taking place at the Rose Gardens of Buffalo’s Delaware Park for 11 years. Though their instructors have been doing this for many years, prior experience isn’t needed to step in and join the fun.

“You can be a complete beginner. We take everyone. Just come out and have fun with us,” Haykel said. “Have an open mind and an open heart, learn something new and you will be with such a diverse group of people.”

On average, they’ll have 60 to 70 people lace up their dancing shoes and they encourage everyone to give it a try.

“You’ll end up enjoying it more than you think, I feel like, because people oftentimes think it’s harder than it really is and if you really just take your time, and be patient with yourself — just have fun. The main thing is about having fun,” Williams said.
