Second Generation Theatre is back at Shea’s Smith Theatre with a show-stopping lineup of stories about joy, hope, and perseverance

SGT’s 2022/23 season beautifully examines the journey of individuals navigating their relationships with themselves and their families-both those they’re born into and those that they create. Whether it’s a little girl searching for a home in The Secret Garden, one man’s lifelong list of all the things worth living for that is Every Brilliant Thing, or an aspiring composer navigating love, friendship and the pressures of life as an artist at the core of Tick, Tick…Boom!, these stories remind us of the joys in life that can only be found once a hardship is overcome,” shares the Second Generation team.

The season launches on October 14th with a family friendly, abridged version of The Secret Garden that re-tells a classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett of finding home and family where you least expect it. This production is Directed & Choreographed by Michael Oliver- Walline along with Music Direction by Allan Paglia. Dates for this show are:

Thursday October 20th & 27th @ 7:30 pm
Friday October 14th, 21st & 28th @ 7:30 pm
Saturday October 15th, 22nd & 29th @ 2:00 pm & 8:00 pm
Sunday October 16th, 23rd & 30th @ 2:00 pm

The second production of the season, Duncan MacMillan and Jonny Donahoe’s Every Brilliant Thing is a directorial debut for Charmagne Chi, a city-wide recognized comedic actress. This one- man play takes the audience through his life and his on-going list of “every brilliant thing” there is to live for. A hilarious and heart-breaking look at life, loss, and how we move on. The unique thing about this one? The audience plays every other character!

“Normally when we say ‘audience participation,’ people tense up and think they’re going to have to come on stage and sing a silly song or wear a funny hat, but in this piece they really make a community out of the audience. Every performance is so different because of the people in the audience and what they bring to each show. I think it’s a beautiful way to kind of bring together and build a community within the theater, especially after everything we’ve been through,”

Kelly Copps, co-founder, Second Generation Theatre Company

Dates for this show are:

Thursday March 9th & 16th @ 7:30 pm
Friday March 3rd, 10th & 17th @ 7:30 pm
Saturday March 4th, 11th & 18th @ 8:00 pm
Sunday March 5th, 12th, and 19th @ 2:00 pm

The season closes with Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick…BOOM! Directed by Louis Colaiacovo, and Choreographed by Beth Polito with Music Direction by Joe Isgar. This production tells the story of a promising composer living in NYC… but he’s almost 30 and what has he done? A fast-paced musical about being true to yourself and what “success” really means from the composer of RENT.

“It’s a really beautiful piece about being an artist and about what you sacrifice in order to create, the relationships that you make, and ultimately just the different struggles and needs of creative people,”

Kristin Bentley, co-founder, Second Generation Theatre Company
