Spring Live Paint Pop-Up at Wax and Wane in Support of Art Supply Fund

One of Buffalo’s newest art collectives – Nickel City Wax and Wane Community Arts Studio – will be hosting a live painting event on Saturday, April 23, in support of the collective’s Art Supply Fund. Once in place, the Fund will allow the collective to “supplement funding for supplies, to keep the costs super low and (hopefully) establish a ‘pay what you can’ scenario for artists.”

Attendees to the pop-up will mix and mingle with six artists as they work on their creations. Guests will also have a chance to browse wares from a multitude of vendors.

The event is being organized by Jenn Barton (owner of Nickel City Wax and Wane) and Jillian Burton (artist), who have orchestrated the following:

Create a living floral piece with Living Floral Design and make art of your very own with Nickel City Wax and Wane.Pretty Pagan Creations and Light Maker Michelle will be offering tandem tarot readings to our guests as well.Watch, hang out, sip and shop with some of our favorite local fine artists and vendors. After the event, each finished piece will be available for auction.

I asked Jillian how she came to team up with Jenn to host the event. This is what she had to say:

“Jenn and I have been friendly for around a decade. I was living in Denver when I became serious about my art and started posting on Instagram. Finding my voice and style of my own opened the door to a new world of friendships, and strengthened my connections with other creatives – like Jenn!

“When I returned to Buffalo, I was exploring a passion I have for bringing creatives together and providing a space for our artistic community to grow. It turned out, so was Jenn. I think where we align is with a shared passion for making art accessible and approachable. We love encouraging people of all ages and abilities to create with us.

“Jenn’s new studio space is the epitome of the term accessible, and that is basically our mission for this Live Paint Event. We want to gather creatives and provide them with all the tools they need to create and feel proud. We want to help lift up other artists within our community, and we invite the public to join us.

“In the process of planning this event, I believe we have created a real sense of community amongst the artists. Some of us are seasoned pros, who create ‘live art’ often. For others, this is their first time ever painting in public! Thankfully, we have all been able to lean on each other for advice and support. What I thought was a relatively simple concept now has an exciting range of depth. It’s been an absolute privilege to be able to work with so many talented artists.”

Wax and Wane’s Spring Pop-Up Event will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Doors will open at 6pm. Main events will take place from 6-8pm, and the event will end by 9pm. This is a BYOB event so feel free to bring your favorite beer or wine.
