The Others at BOX

In the depths of Winter when the hibernation instinct sets in, movement can be as fleeting as the sun. 8pm this Saturday, beat back the sedimentary doldrums with some meditative wiggling, at BOX Gallery’s first ever solo exhibit hosted by dance group The Others. BOX Gallery at the Hostel hosts a one night only installation with a chance to add your own interpretive movement to the show.

Founded in February of last year by Charlie Finan, The Others is a free improvisational movement class with the end goal of creating choreography to be performed. Charlie, who writes poetry under the pseudonym, c m taylor, is a queer multidisciplinary maker of collaborative, improvisational performance installations.  While the group has a few trained modern dancers, everyone is welcome to join in and participate regardless of experience. Performers’ backgrounds range from traditional studio dance to martial arts and aerials. The cast is made of any interested and available movers, creating a varied vocabulary movement both rehearsed and improvised. The Others is “officially” a dance group, but the performance this Saturday will incorporate several different mediums of collaboratively created art.

The night will be two twenty minute performances,”Give and Take” and “M” with a ten minute intermission. Finan will direct the choreographies, and perform in”Give and Take”.  The Others is comprised of Finan themselves, Devon Finan, Lauren Lerner, Tevin Liao, Angela Lopez, and Dawn Spears. Every dancer improvises on stage during the structured piece, and movement is figured out collectively, so that the final product feels very co-created. The aim is always to discover rather than to build. Neutral masks typically associated with acting classes are worn in order to give distance between self and the “Other” character. A visual installation crafted by Finan and three other dancers will hang in the space during the performances. Costumes For “M” were designed and handmade by Noelle Beanau, and original music was created for the  show by Bryan Johnson.

Bring your friends, bring your lovers, bring your enemies, bring your curiosity, bring your camera, bring your self. All ages are welcome, although masks might make younger audience members uneasy.
