Woman killed after vehicle is struck by alleged drunk driver on Transit Road

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 51-year-old woman was killed in a crash Monday night on Transit Road after an alleged drunk driver struck her vehicle, the Cheektowaga Police Department announced.

Police said a vehicle driven by Jennifer Hylkema was exiting a parking lot around 9 p.m. on the west side of Transit between Cloverleaf Drive and Rehm Road. As the vehicle was entering into traffic, it was struck on the driver’s side by another vehicle, which was operated by 24-year-old Alondra Ramirez-Santiago of Cheektowaga. Ramirez-Santiago was allegedly driving drunk, according to police.

Hylkema was critically injured in the crash and transported to ECMC, where she later was pronounced deceased.

Ramirez-Santiago was arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, first-degree driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. She was arraigned and remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.

The crash caused a portion of Transit Road to be closed overnight for approximately eight hours. It reopened around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
