High school sports roundup: Section VI athletes compete in various state championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The NYSPHSAA gymnastics, boys swimming and diving, competitive cheerleading and indoor track and field championships all took place this past weekend, and multiple Section VI athletes took home state titles.

3 WNY gymnasts win individual state titles

Section VI had a very successful day during Saturday’s gymnastics championships at Clarence High School, with three athletes winning individual titles while the section took home the team title.

Frontier’s Lea Philarom (vault), Lake Shore’s Emma Langdon (bars) and Frontier’s Kayla Gleason (floor) all claimed individual titles during the event.

Langdon also finished first in the overall event with a score of 38.575. Clarence’s Olivia Chapman (38.300) finished second, while Gleason (37.650) came in fourth.

Frewsburg team, OP swimmer capture state titles

Frewsburg won the 200-yard freestyle relay title and Orchard Park’s Jaxon Bruzgul won the 50-yard freestyle crown at the NYSPHSAA boys swimming and diving championships at Ithaca College.

The Frewsburg team consisting of Aidan McCleery, Conner Dean, Grady Moore and Miles Moore won their race with a time of 1:24:58, while Bruzgul, a senior, finished in 20.85 to claim his title.

Other notable Section VI results included Orchard Park and Frewsburg finishing second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard medley relay and OP’s Liam Clark tallying a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.

Frewsburg’s Alexander Pitts finished 15th in the 1-meter diving championship for Section VI’s best placing in the event.

5 Section VI cheerleading teams compete at states

Clarence finished second in the Class B finals to tally Section VI’s best placing at the NYSPHSAA competitive cheerleading championships Saturday at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.

The Red Devils finished with a score of 80.10 in the finals. Frontier also made it to the finals in Class A, finishing fifth with a 79.20 score.

The other teams representing Section VI were Randolph (seventh in Class D), Iroquois (eighth in Class C) and Williamsville East (eighth in Co-Ed).

Sweet Home high jumper wins state title

Sweet Home’s Brenton Baker won the NYSPHSAA boys high jump title by clearing 6 feet, 9 inches for Section VI’s best result of the state indoor track and field championships Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

In other notable results, Frontier’s Lillie Bogdan tallied two top-three placings, finishing second in the girls 1,500 meters with a time of 4:30.47 and third in the girls 3,000 meters with a time of 9:27.75.

Sweet Home’s Taylor Nugent finished the girls 1,500-meter race walk in 6:53.57, good for second place in the event.
