BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Patrick Ohle scored the championship-winning overtime goal to lift St. Joe’s hockey to a 3-2 victory over Staten Island’s Monsignor Farrell in the New York State Catholic title game Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter.
The win gave the Marauders their first state title since 2019 and 13th since 2003.
St. Joe’s was the dominant team for much of the game, as they lept out to a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the first period on a goal by Anderson Cornwell. Their advantage was doubled on a Cole Kneer tally with just under six minutes to play in the second frame, but minutes later, Matthew Spano scored for Monsignor Farrell to make it a 2-1 game entering the third.
Spano wasn’t done, as he equalized for the Lions with just over five minutes left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied 2-2.
The title-winning goal came on the power play, as Sam Morreale picked up the puck behind the Monsignor Farrell net and sent a pass in front that Ohle buried just over five minutes into the period. Kneer picked up the secondary assist on the overtime winner.
Ohle’s tally came on Joe’s 50th attempt on goal of the game, as they outshot the Lions 50-15. The goal sparked a memorable celebration reminiscent of Teemu Selanne, as the senior forward threw his glove into the air and “shot” it with his stick while sliding through center ice, as pandemonium unfolded among his teammates and the Marauders’ student section.
