Second Chapter Bookstore to host discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors of “His Name is George Floyd”

On Thursday, May 23, Second Chapter Bookstore will be hosting a discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors of “His Name is George Floyd” at Villa Maria College.

Founders of the black-owned bookstore, mother-daughter duo Lisa Queener-Johnson and Stephanie Peete, have invited former Washington Post journalists and authors of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction, His Name is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice – Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa – to discuss their book. The discussion will also center around the topics of race, American history, and how we move forward as a community, and as a country. The authors will be joined by a group of panelists that include prominent community leaders.

“We are so honored to welcome Toluse Olorunnipa and Robert Samuels into our community, as together, we open up a safe space for residents of Western New York to engage in conversations that are critically important to the advancement, safety, and overall representation of our region,” said Peete, co-founder, Second Chapter Bookstore and director of advancement, Say Yes Buffalo. “Olorunnipa and Samuels are bringing their extensive knowledge and research of George Floyd, here, to Buffalo, where two short years ago, suffered a devastatingly painful loss at the hands of senseless, racially motivated violence. These topics are deeply personal, and we look to listen to one another, speak up, and take action so that we create better futures for ourselves and for generations to come.”

Olorunnipa and Samuels will also be joined by panelists and leading figures within the local community, including Wil Green, assistant dean of outreach and community engagement, University at Buffalo, Graduate School of Education; CJ Banks, special assistant to the president, Villa Maria College, and founder, KORP Foundation, Inc.; and Jillian Hanesworth, two-time Emmy-nominated founding poet laureate emeritus of Buffalo.
