PaintCare makes it easy to drop off cans of unwanted paint, primer, stains, etc.

Chances are that you’ve got a couple of old paint cans lying around, with leftover paint that you will never use. Recently, a friend of mine told me about the non-profit PaintCare.org, which “represents paint manufacturers (paint producers) to plan and operate paint stewardship programs in U.S. states and jurisdictions that pass paint stewardship laws.”

Conveniently, PaintCare maps out sites where people can drop off their partially-filled paint cans (interior and exterior), as well as clear finishes, sealers, primers, and stains.

Typically, I wait for Erie County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection events to take place, but more often than not these are small windows of time, and in places that are not exactly convenient. Because of this, unwanted paint cans tend to get stacked in a corner of the garage, awaiting the perfect opportunity to drop them off.

Now, that perfect opportunity abounds, thanks to a handful of convenient drop-off sites that are in closer proximity to my house. Plus, since I don’t have to wait for a pop-up event, I can rest assured that I can make a drop-off at my leisure.

It’s illegal to dispose of used paint cans, partially filled with paint, in garbage cans, but people still do it. Or they illegally dump them in random places.

Thanks to PaintCare.org, there’s no excuse to not do the right thing.

Napoleon Dynamite Live!

It’s hard to believe that Napoleon Dynamite was made almost 20 years ago. Considered one of the most quoted films of its generation, Napoleon Dynamite is as relevant today as it was when it was first released. Even now, the timeless comedy has garnered an entirely new fan base, thanks to its brilliant line-up of actors/characters, including Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Efren Ramirez (Pedro), and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico).

Now, these aforementioned actors are hitting the road, visiting a slew of cities and delivering upon their famed antics.

On Thursday, April 13 (7:30pm), Heder, Ramirez, and Gries will be making an appearance at University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts. If you’ve ever thought about what it would be like to be in Napoleon Dynamite’s shoes, or Pedro’s or Uncle Rico’s for that matter, this is your chance.

The event includes a screening of the film, along with an outlandish conversation with three of the most memorable cast members/characters that ever came together to grace the big screen.

Pack some tots in your zippered cargo sweatpants, wear a “Vote for Pedro” shirt, and practice your most impressive drawing of a liger. Prepping for this unusual outing will be half the fun!

VIP Meet and Greet is SOLD OUT.

‘Over the Edge’ – Rappel Down Seneca One Tower

We’ve seen sledders sled down an exitway of The Skyway. We’ve watched sunners race to the top of Seneca One Tower. We’ve witnessed cyclists ride their bikes over The Skyway. Now, The Arc Erie County New York – a not-for-profit organization that supports children and adults with disabilities and their families – is inviting adventurers to rappel down Seneca One Tower.

The event, called Over the Edge, aims to raise $100,000 to support a number of The Arc’s vocational, clinical, educational, residential, and habilitative services.

Megan was the first rappeler to reach her $2,000 fundraising goal and secure her rappelling spot down Seneca One

Currently, The Arc is inviting interested participants – 44 thrill-seekers total – to sign up for the event. Each participant will be required to raise at least $2000 before they can rappel down the 529 foot face of the tower.

“We could not be more thrilled to participate in this fundraiser and to bring this larger-than-life event to one of the most exciting new buildings in Buffalo, helping spread awareness as far as we can to show our community and beyond how they can support our important mission,” said Doug DiGesare, CEO, The Arc Erie County New York. “The Arc Erie County has been dedicated to supporting people with developmental disabilities for more than 70 years, and it’s through the help of fundraisers like ‘Over the Edge for The Arc Erie County’ that we’re able to help the individuals we serve reach their full potential and experience incredible accomplishments.”

The fundraising event on Wednesday, June 14 will include an all-day “Party in the Plaza” celebration from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring music, food trucks, and special guest appearances by the Buffalo Bandettes.

Registration to sign up as a fundraiser is currently open, with rappelling slots still available. For more information, or to inquire about sponsorship opportunities, visit www.arceriecounty.org/over-the-edge

2023 WEDIfest @ Downtown Bazaar

It’s going to be quite a year for Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI) and the West Side Bazaar. Not only will the Bazaar be relocating to its new home at 1432 Niagara Street, a second location is underway in the heart of Downtown (at the former EXPO location – 617 Main Street). All of this exciting news is, of course, in the wake of a devastating fire that broke out at the Bazaar’s Grant Street location in September of 2022.

The resilient nature of the West Side Bazaar can be attributed to its tenants, supporters within the community, and the fortitude and resolve of WEDI. That’s why it’s so important that we all support WEDI with its upcoming WEDIfest – a celebratory fundraising event.

“Please join us for a memorable evening of connection, music, food from the West Side Bazaar/Downtown Bazaar, an open bar, and auctions of unique gifts and experiences. This premier networking event is an opportunity for giving that directly impacts this city and region that we all love and believe in. We look forward to once again hosting the community in a celebration of all that WEDI has accomplished and all that is planned for WEDI’s future.”

Concert in support of WNY Gold Star Mothers

It is a club that nobody wants to join. But it is also a club that offers a lifeline between its members, a support system that they all cherish. WNY Gold Star Mothers is a group of women, all of whom have had a child killed in the military.

“You go on a rollercoaster of emotions as they speak about their sons,” shared WGRZ’s Pete Gallivan (lead image), speaking about his recent interview with three Western New York Gold Star Mothers. “Beginning with pride and love, their stories then travel through the darkness of grief, and then find inspiration. They feel in their hearts they are giving their loss meaning. They feel that helping other veterans and their families is the best way of preserving their son’s legacy.”

As a way to build support for the Gold Star Mothers, Buffalo ‘Blues4Vets’ music campaign – an organization that has raised over $200,000 in donations for 21 veteran charities since 2016 – is hosting a concert on Wednesday, April 19 (6pm), at The Cave (71 Military Avenue), which is part of the Sportsmens Tavern’s music complex. The concert features several members of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.

Over the past five years, more than 50 WNY ‘blues4vets’ music events have been held. These concerts have helped to reveal significant needs for Veterans, particularly the importance for the community to aid in the assistance of military veterans (especially combat) to effectively transition to civilian life. The funds raised at the concerts are earmarked towards these efforts.

While there are significant needs for Veterans, there is another group that has also suffered immeasurable losses.

The White Van

Hollywood puts a cinematic spin on it, with slow motion waving flags and hugs from neighbors… when that white van pulls up in front of a house and 2 uniformed officers get out to deliver the news. ‘Blue Star’ families (with a member in active duty) all share a painful and prolonged trepidation, about seeing the van or getting a phone call from the pentagon or a commanding officer, that their child will not be coming home.

Forget Hollywood’s romantic notions. Listening to the moms talk, recalling the terrifying moments, it feels raw.

The history of Gold Star Mothers can be traced back to 1928 (World War I era).

Since 9.11 – the Afghanistan and Iraq era – there are approximately 60 WNY families who have lost a son or daughter in combat, or on occasion in a training accident [source].

Ultimately, by helping others, the Gold Star Mothers demonstrate boundless courage, by using their deep wounds to drive the mission to serve… but it still hurts.

Every Parent’s Promise

This author’s first thought – holding my newborn daughter moments after her birth – was probably similar to most parents. It’s a sacred thing, the promise we make to our babies: ‘Nothing bad will ever happen to you as long as I’m around. I will keep you safe, protected – away from harm.’

I’ve never asked a Gold Star Mother about this, it seems too personal. But I’m guessing they remember it when they think about their respective son or daughter that never got the chance to be a Veteran.

For most Veterans and their families the most common challenge is making that transition back from military to civilian life. Many Veterans return with wounds that are both seen and unseen. Gold Star Mothers are not a natural fit in this veterans’ community because they carry a different story. It’s important to remember that these mothers are the embodiment of the memories of their sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice. Therefore, it’s important to give them the recognition and support they deserve. They are paying a price that few of us will ever understand.
